Did you know this fluffy white cloud is NOT an albino hamster? She is a combination of several genes (dominant, recessive, and codominant) that all contribute to her color. Partial albinism does exist in Syrian hamsters via genes like dilute and extreme dilute! Sugar Baby has two genes of silver grey (codominant), two genes of yellow (dominant), two genes of cinnamon (recessive), two genes of black (recessive), and I suspect one gene of Russian Shadow, a strange gene that is dominant to cinnamon

Our trend of smaller litter sizes continues with Miss Sunshine, who has 5 pups! We have two rusts (one is satin) one solid black (I think they are satin), one satin silver beige, and one satin black dominant spot. I expect this litter to be mostly shorthaired, but by probability 25% of the litter should be longhaired- we will know when they are a bit older. Goodie Bag appears to have a medium sized litter. We are also currently trying to breed Sally (who may be pregnant) and Mage (who is a bit o

Sugar Baby has a big litter! They turned 2 weeks old on Monday and I have not gotten a final count yet, but there are at least 12. Check out the wee one in the top corner doing a little backward stumble. All of the females in this litter are silver chocolate torts, and with that I’m going to guess that all of the males are silver pearl chocolate. This means that mama is rust too (which was not obvious except for maybe her eyes being a bit darker red). While I’m happy Sugar has a nice big healthy

Ok, so Jet has always been busy and ready to party! His brother Rocket was the LAST to explore the wheel 😅. Hamsters can have wildly different personalities! Some are busy, some calm, some scared of their own shadow, some confident. Temperament is mostly genetic in nature, but how we nurture and bond with our hamsters is important too. I try my best to select for breeding hamsters that are confident and social, but also calm and cage content. This isn’t an easy combination to come by! MOST soci

I’m happy to announce Lemonade has a litter of absolute lovelies that are turning 4 weeks old tomorrow. It’s been so hectic lately with the holidays (and just life) that I haven’t had a chance to introduce them. We will take photos of them sometime this weekend. This fuzzy creature is a black tortoiseshell long haired female carrying polywhite. I don’t know yet what theme we will pick for names, but she is a definite holdback and I think she looks like an Ewok from Star Wars. #hamsters #floof #h

Moon & Stars has 5 pups- one is a bit small but making progress with growth. They will be 4 weeks this Friday. I’ve assumed that Moon & Stars is homozygous for silver grey, meaning she has 2 copies of the gene, and all of her pups should inherit one copy. I wouldn’t expect silver grey to show up on just black as it masks the color, but there are 2 pups that don’t quite look silver to me, despite being black combination colors. One looks RS dove (which would definitely be lighter with silver grey

When the seed bag opens…. These babies are going home starting tomorrow, and I’m going to miss them terribly. They have been my little buddies every evening- so friendly and curious. Wishing them wonderful adventures moving forward! hamsters #syrianhamsters #smallpetsofinstagram #hamstergram #pets #syrianhamster #hamster #poppybeehamstery #poppybeeathome | Poppy Bee Hamstery

Syrian hamster pups are spring loaded and wiggly! It’s normal for them to protest handling- they are tiny prey animals just getting accustomed to human hands and smells! I keep initial handling sessions brief and offer yummy food to win their favor. Helping them get used to being held different ways will aid the bonding process with their future owners and make health checks easier and less stressful throughout their lives. #babyhamster #wigglewigglewiggle #wiggle #paws #whiskersnpaws #whiskers

Sally’s pups are weaned! They are having a ball exploring their weaning bin. I’ll be separating them by sex later today or tomorrow. There are 5 males and 4 females- we plan to hold back 2 of them to consider for our breeding program later. Moon has a small litter, she sadly lost some pups early on- and I couldn’t tell you why exactly, but it’s not uncommon. I should know more about how they are all doing in less than a week as I give mamas a lot of space initially. Gooseberry was in heat yester

Lizzy has four little ones - two females and two males. I started calling the golden dominant spot “Goldilocks”, so I will name the other three after bears! Baby 3 has a sore spot on his bum, I’m not sure if it’s a healing injury or something more serious. At this stage we will monitor. Thankfully he’s eating and behaving normally otherwise. #hamsters #babyhamsters🐹🐹 #smallpetsofinstagram #poppybeehamstery #poppybeeathome | Poppy Bee Hamstery
