I was watching this scene earlier and wondering why I find birds particularly fascinating with their movements and activity. Honestly, this fascination was the same when i was a kid. It's largely because they don't have hands... something which is difficult for a lot of people (or maybe just me?) to comprehend, given how much we depend on them. So while humans manipulate and complete so many actions with their hands, for birds, it's usually the beak doing most of the work. And this is why provid

Two types of confidence: • flaunting your tail feathers • talking to inanimate objects like they’re listening Wish the second wasn't more relatable 😅 #accessibility video description: on a branch, a weiro sits, flaring their tail feathers whole holding one on their beak, slowly preening the whole feather carefully. Camera pans slightly to a budgie facing the other direction, face-to-face with the aviary wire, head-bobbing and chatting. The budgie is mid-moult and looking a little rough. | Littl

One of our one-legged wonders, Buddy, taking good care of his beak and feathers 😊 It may look difficult to us, and even a little heartbreaking thinking of having to amputate, but these guys adapt beautifully to single-legged life; Buddy would have a much more difficult life if he'd kept his bad leg. #accessibility video description: Buddy the one-legged budgie is sitting on a branch in the aviary, rubbing his beak on the branch, before preening his back and beneath his feathers. Lucky loves his scritches 🥰 He has an old beak injury and gets beak trims, and will be due for one soon. Beaks grow at different rates so it can be hard to judge how often they need it done, so monitoring is important. Despite not being able to fly, he's a happy boy and takes life in his stride ❤️ #accessibility video description: Lucky the weiro is on a branch, bowing his head and body from side to side kind of with heart wings, before getting onto my hand. He climbs up my arm which is extende

Sunny and friends enjoying picking at some foliage 😊 Sunny always does this beak movement - a more exaggerated version of the grinding that other birds do - when he's finished eating. He's come a long way from that gorgeous bird found totally covered in mites, with a long beak and big patches of feathers missing! #accessibility video description: Sunny and some other budgies on a branch in the special needs aviary. One budgie pecks lightly in warning at another who tries to interact. While Sunn

I was amused at first, then I was impressed 😊 #accessibility video description: Pudge, a female plumhead parrot, lands on the bowl of fruit I'm holding. She grabs a big chunk of apple (looks too big for her, bigger than her head) and has trouble with it. She eats a smaller part of it. Then, determined, she grasps the big bit in her beak again and flies to a branch with it. It's a swinging branch and she tries to nibble on one leg but then seems to decide she needs something more stable to stand

Is there anything cuter than a tiny head disappearing into full scritch-bliss mode? Watching these two settle into their preening routine is one of the purest sights we get at Little Beaks. What you’re seeing: • Preening is how birds strengthen their social bonds. • It’s calming, safe, and reassuring for both birds involved. • When a bird ‘melts’ into it like this, it means they deeply trust who they’re with. • This is flock life at its absolute best: gentle, cooperative, and completely natural.

The 'subtle' hint referred to in the previous post. Did I read it right? 😏 #accessibility video description: a red-masked yellow kakariki parrot stretches their leg through aviary wire to try and reach some grass just outside. We’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately, and it’s led to some important decisions. Little Beaks is going to be changing. Partly out of necessity - and partly to reconnect with the roots of why we started in the first place. Over time, the role Little Beaks has come to play has grown beyond what we originally imagined, which is amazing and has opened up many possibilities. Taking the time to reflect on this now gives us the opportunity to refocus on where we can make the greatest difference f

So much digging atm! #accessibility video description: a blue budgie waddles between two log pieces, then stops with a leg on each while leaning down to start digging soil with her beak. She then climbs down and gets into the growing hole, and starts pulling stuff out. Her mate is on a log nearby, preening. | Little Beaks

Getting down to their level 😊 love seeing how much activity these guys get up to on the ground. They'd spend a large part of their day doing this sort of thing in the wild. Whenever we get a new bird that's been indoor and largely in a cage, it's wonderful watching them foraging on the ground the first time. Natural instinct kicks in. Plus, watching them waddle/run/jump is adorable 🥰 | Little Beaks

A different container and different food (well, minus the soaked seed) makes for some confused birds - nice to see them still enjoying the vegies though. Includes kale, carrot, spinach, beetroot, chillies, cabbage, and sweet potato. All raw and rinsed. #accessibility video description: I'm holding a rectangular clear Tupperware container with chopped and shredded vegies. Some birds including weiros, budgies, and kakarikis, land around the edge (and occasionally jump in) to check it out. In the b

Little beak with a big sound ❤️ #accessibility video description: A close-up of a bright orange canary singing. The canary’s soft feathers are fluffed around their neck and face. Beaky seems to be feeling relieved after his beak trim, which we get done by avian vet every few months. This isn't generally required since healthy birds should be able to maintain their beaks naturally using branches and other foliage they chew, but in some cases the beak doesn't develop properly, so the grinding action doesn't work as it should. Beaky is fine in every other way. His beak grew pretty quickly in the past few weeks so we'll be monitoring and seeing if the next trim needs to be s

Don't underestimate the power of a hen on a mission! Branches and foliage/natural materials to chew and pull apart are essential for beak maintenance (how they keep things healthy in the wild!) Also, the strength in those legs! #accessibility video description: a budgie is digging and chewing at wood between a log and a bit of pine bark. The pine bark edge has beak marks creating indents down it. Near the end, the budgie uses their legs to help balance and give them more force. | Little Beaks

Branch destruction, budgie style! Did you know, naturally, budgies and other birds shouldn't need their nails or beak trimmed?* In the wild, they do this through rubbing/wearing on barky branches, chewing branches and foliage, and general interaction with their natural environment. Unfortunately, many businesses take advantage of the misconception by marketing products like sand paper perches as the answer for trimming - when these are in fact potentially unsafe and can cause harm (soft flesh on
