Some parts of the Chicago area saw wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour as powerful thunderstorms hammered the region Sunday.

Damage has been reported in Champaign County and several thousand people are without power in central Illinois

The tornado watch expired at 8 p.m., although a tornado watch continues for the far southern Indiana counties of Dubois, Orange, Scott, and Washington counties until 1 a.m.

Forecasters warn of widespread damaging winds, very large hail and tornadoes, from Texas to the East Coast starting on Sunday.

A series of severe storms triggered tornado warnings and tornado watches in much of central and northern Illinois on March 19, moving out of the area by late evening. The storms caused a smattering of power outages in northwest Indiana and widespread damage across the Chicagoland area.

The severe weather won't be as widespread as last Friday's outbreak, but it could still produce dangerous conditions in parts of Illinois and Indiana, as well as parts of surrounding states.
