A good portion of the state of Alabama, including nearly all of the Wiregrass, is in the “Abnormally Dry” intensity category according to the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor.

The Alabama Forestry Commission stated its firefighters suppressed 181 wildfires Tuesday, a record number for the agency in one day.

The Alabama Forestry Commission provided an update to the wildfire situation across the state. AFC said ahead of the storm system that moved through the state Tuesday, gusty winds and low relative humidities resulted in “extremely erratic fire behavior.

On Tuesday, as a severe storm system swept through the state, AFC wildland firefighters say 181 wildfires were suppressed, a record number for one day. Those fires accounted for the burning of 1,700 acres across Alabama.

There was red flag warning issued Saturday across much of the state due to high wind gusts and low humidity, increasing the conditions for wildfires.

Residents in Madison County and across Alabama are asked to stop any and all burns this weekend as conditions are favorable for wildfires.
