Justice Manmohan’s elevation comes at a time when the Supreme Court is operating with two vacancies, and his appointment is expected to enhance the representation of the Delhi HC in the apex court.

While the retirement age of top court judges is 65 years, HC judges demit office at 62. CJ Manmohan is scheduled to take oath as SC judge on Thursday.

Historically, the Delhi HC contributes three to four judges to SC at any given time, making justice Manmohan’s elevation timely to restore this representation

CJ Manmohan, who enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1987, went on to practice at the Supreme Court (SC) as well as the Delhi High Court (HC). He also served as a senior panel advocate of the Union government at the Delhi HC and SC.

On November 28, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and comprising Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Abhay S Oka, had recommended the elevation of Justice Manmohan.

The Centre on Tuesday notified the elevation of Delhi High Court’s Chief Justice Manmohan as a judge of the Supreme Court.   In a related post,  Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice (independent charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal on X wrote,
