Wichita is now under an “extreme cold watch” for the winter storm that is forecast to hit Friday and could impact the southern half of Kansas all the way to the east coast. It is also expected to bring 5-10 inches of snow.

Parts of Kansas are expected to see as much as a foot of snow Jan. 23-25 as a massive winter storm sweeps across more than half the nation.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Many school districts around Kansas have canceled classes with wind chills on Monday morning projected to hit -10 to -20 degrees. Wichita State University, however, has opted to hold in-person classes even with these frigid temperatures. Some of the students weren’t exactly excited for their morning commutes.

Snow has already started falling in Kansas, earlier than forecasters expected, but the heaviest snow is still forecast to start later this evening, Wichita-based National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Baerg said during a Friday morning webinar.
