Hamas said it has agreed to a deal proposed by Qatar and Egypt to pause the militant group’s war with Israel in Gaza, fueling optimism that a long-awaited breakthrough in negotiations could be close.

A key mediator on Tuesday stressed the urgency of brokering a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after Hamas showed a “positive response” to a proposal from Arab countries, but Israel has yet to weigh in as its military prepares an offensive in some of the territory’s most populated areas.

Hopes for Gaza ceasefire talks revived Monday as Hamas accepted a new Egyptian-Qatari plan after 22 months of war.

According to Egyptian media, the deal proposes an initial 60-day truce, partial hostage release and provisions to allow for the entry of aid.
