Cajon Pass appears primed for a massive earthquake crossing two major Southern California faults
The ground north and east of Los Angeles holds one of Southern California’s most uneasy meeting points. At Cajon Pass, the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems crowd together in a tectonic bottleneck.
A 2.7 magnitude micro earthquake occurred near Brawley, California on Saturday evening, with the shake being felt in nearby areas such as Westmorland, Imperial, Calipatria and El Centro.
Earthquakes usually occur along fracture zones in Earth's crust, where large tectonic plates slide past one another and become locked. Stress builds up over long periods and is suddenly released in the form of an earthquake.
More than 360 minor earthquakes were reported in and around the Imperial County city of Brawley between the Salton Sea and the Mexican Border.
