Less than a year after his retirement, former Boone County Sheriff Michael A. Helmig has died, according to a statement from current sheriff, Les K. Hill. Helmig, 66, was surrounded by his family and loved ones at his home when he died Jan. 27. He was the Boone County Sheriff for 27 years.
