As revealed by Ryan Kartje of the Los Angeles Times, this marked the first time a USC player had won the award. Kartje also confirmed that Watkins became the fourth sophomore in the award's history to win, joining Courtney Paris (Oklahoma), Maya Moore (UConn) and Breanna Stewart (UConn).
The Trojans superstar led her team to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
