Kitao Sakurai is kicking it to the street. The filmmaker, perhaps best known for writing, directing and exec producing The Eric Andre Show, has been tapped to direct Street Fighter, Legendary Entertainment’s feature adaptation of the classic video game from Capcom.

Sakurai inherits the project from Talk To Me filmmakers Danny & Michael Philippou, who attached themselves in April of 2023, following the studio’s acquisition of exclusive film and TV rights to the property.

A new Street Fighter movie has been in the works for some time, and now it's moving ahead once again with a new director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip, The Eric Andre Show) is signed on to direct the movie at Legendary Entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Wednesday that Sakurai has stepped into the director’s chair for 2026’s Street Fighter movie, which is being developed and produced by Capcom and Legendary. Sony is distributing the film, which has a March 20, 2026 release date.
