Ryan Coogler is explaining how he pulled off a magic trick. He's not talking about convincing Warner Bros. to greenlight "Sinners," a $90-million blues-steeped thriller about vampires descending on a small Southern town in the 1930s.

Coogler's Sinners is the best film of the year so far. 2025 is yet to have that one box office hit which has people tripping over their tongues to praise, but it has arrived, and every inch of it is as arresting as the last.

The film is Coogler’s first from his own original idea after making two Black Panther films for Marvel and Creed (2015) as well as Fruitvale Station (2013).
