After the New York Mets signed Juan Soto to the largest contract in MLB history, he made another deal with 25-year-old infielder Brett Baty. Soto has worn No. 22 during the entirety of his MLB career with the Yankees, Padres, and Nationals. But that number was already taken by Baty, who has played for the Mets since 2022.

One clause in Juan Soto’s s record-breaking deal with the Mets this offseason was that he’d get his No. 22. So, in securing the superstar’s spot in Queens, Brett Baty gave him the number. On Thursday, Soto thanked him for the favor. The Mets posted a video on Instagram of Soto gifting Baty a 2025 Chevy Tahoe as a token of his thanks.

Juan Soto has worn No. 22 since breaking into the big leagues with the Washington Nationals in 2018. So when he signed his $765 million deal with the New York Mets in the offseason, there remained one obstacle in his way to keep the number.

The New York Mets superstar signing Juan Soto recently surprised his teammate Brett Baty with a lavish gift for giving up No. 22 jersey.

Soto has worn the number in Washington, San Diego and last season with the Yankees. Baty has worn the number during his first three seasons with the Mets. He also wore it in the Mets farm system and was No. 22 in high school where he wore it playing baseball and basketball at Lake Travis High School in Texas.
