Democratic lawmakers condemned the facility dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by Trump loyalists as crowded, unsanitary and bug-infested.

The new immigration detention center at an isolated airstrip in the Florida Everglades that President Donald Trump visited was heralded by Republicans as a potential model for other states to aggressively ramp up detention and deportation efforts.

Amid the controversy, emergency management officials on Wednesday invited state legislators and members of Congress to visit the facility on Saturday, setting up a 90-minute tour restricted to lawmakers.
