Asteroid 2024 YR4 is orbiting near Earth’s region of the solar system, and preliminary estimates by space agencies give it a roughly 2 percent chance of hitting Earth on Dec. 22, 2032.
The asteroid, known as Asteroid 2024 YR4, was first reported to the Minor Planet Center on Dec. 27, 2024. At the time, initial estimate said it had a 1.2% chance of striking Earth.
Initial projections gave the asteroid little more than a 1% chance of impacting Earth on Dec. 22, 2032. Those odds have steadily increased since then and now stand at a record 3.1%.
An impact with Earth would cause a massive explosion and impact crater, astronomers say. The asteroid, known as Asteroid 2024 YR4, was first reported to the Minor Planet Center on Dec. 27, 2024.
First discovered in 1999, Bennu, the near-Earth asteroid, could possibly drift into the planet's orbit and could hit the planet by September 2182, according to the OSIRIS-REx science team.
This is not the first mini-moon that Earth has had. 2024 PT5 is tracing a very similar path to asteroid 2022 NX1, which was also about 33 feet in diameter. In 1981 and 2022, the asteroid 2022 NX1 ...
Near-Earth objects are entities such as asteroids and comets that orbit the sun like the planets do. This asteroid orbits the planet every 1,310 days, roughly equivalent to about three-and-a-half ...
The asteroid will make its next closest approach to Earth in 2135. While Bennu won't come close enough to pose a threat to Earth then, knowing its exact trajectory can help scientists better ...
The asteroid will pass by Friday and Saturday on a track that scientists suggest is slightly less than half the average distance to the moon from Earth — which is still 174,650 kilometers, or ...
NASA says that asteroid Bennu could crash into planet earth in September 2182. NEW YORK -- An asteroid NASA's been tracking for nearly 25 years could impact Earth in the future, a new report reveals.
