At least one person was killed in Bangladesh in clashes between security forces and Hindus protesting against the arrest of a religious leader, police said, even as neighbouring India urged that the safety of Hindus and minorities be ensured.

Bangladeshi supporters of an arrested Hindu leader clashed with security forces on Tuesday after the outspoken monk was denied bail on sedition charges, with one person killed, police said.

Bangladesh on Tuesday reacted to the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das on Tuesday. Reacting to India's statement on the matter, Bangladesh said that the monk's arrest had "been misconstrued by certain quarters". It further said that India's statement was "unfounded" and stood "contrary to the spirit of friendship".

His arrest has triggered protests by community members in various locations, including the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram.

The Indian MEA urged Bangladesh authorities under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.

In Bangladesh, police used teargas to disperse Hindu protesters angered by the arrest of religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das. Das, associated with ISKCON, faces sedition charges related to a rally in Chittagong.
